Yes. Foreign nationals — including international students, expatriates, and tourists on long-stay visas — can legally purchase and transfer vehicle ownership in Malaysia. You will need a valid passport, a pass/visa with sufficient remaining validity, and the vehicle grant (geran). We specialise in guiding non-Malaysians through every step of the process, including liaising with JPJ on your behalf.

The process involves four main steps:

  1. Document preparation — Gather vehicle grant, both parties' ICs/passports, valid road tax, and valid insurance.
  2. Vehicle inspection — Our inspector verifies the vehicle chassis number and condition matches the grant.
  3. JPJ submission — We submit the ownership transfer application to the relevant JPJ branch.
  4. Completion — Updated grant and confirmation documents are returned to the new owner within 1–3 working days.

Same-state transfers are typically completed within 1–3 working days once all documents are verified. Interstate transfers (e.g. Kuala Lumpur to Penang) may take 3–5 working days depending on the JPJ branches involved. Company vehicle transfers may require additional time for SSM verification. We will provide you with a clear timeline at the start of your case.

No guarantor is required for a cash purchase of a vehicle. If you are applying for a hire-purchase loan, individual banks have their own requirements for foreign nationals, which may include a local guarantor, a minimum income threshold, or a larger down payment. For outright cash transfers, we can complete the process using your passport and valid visa alone.

Yes. Company-registered vehicles can be transferred to an individual owner. This requires additional documentation from SSM (Companies Commission of Malaysia), including the company's board resolution authorising the sale, the company's registration documents, and the authorised signatory's ID. We handle all corporate transfer cases and will advise you on the exact documents needed for your company type.

Before committing to a purchase, we recommend checking the following:

  • Vehicle history — Outstanding summons, accident records, and finance settlement status.
  • Chassis & engine numbers — Must match the vehicle grant exactly.
  • Road tax & insurance — Confirm both are valid on the transfer date.
  • Condition inspection — Engage our professional inspector to assess mechanical and body condition.
  • Outstanding loan — Ensure the seller's hire-purchase loan is fully settled before transfer.

Our inspection service covers all of the above in a single visit.
